Glee, “On My Way” (Television)
February 22, 2012 -Maybe it would be in Glee‘s best interest to rename its show from Glee to Bleak. If any casual viewer had tuned in expecting the same, usual happy-go-lucky teenagers and peppy Sue Sylvester wise cracks, they may have gotten more than they bargained for.
Peeling back to be serious, Glee‘s winter finale, ambiguously titled “On My Way,” took the hard road in portraying gay teen bullying and teen suicide. This story belonged to David Karofsky (Max Adler), whose heartless outing at his new school by his fellow jocks, juxtaposed by Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup,” covered by Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), was nothing short of heartbreaking.… Read More
Glee, “Heart” (Television)
February 15, 2012 -Sometimes, there’s no other word to describe an episode except cute. And while I despise that word with every fiber of my being, nothing screams the c-word (no, not that c-word) louder from the rooftops than a Valentine’s Day episode, which had enough winning numbers and cute coupley stuff to make for an enjoyable hour on Glee.
To make a long story short, there’s a lot going on. For one, Rory (Damian McGinty) and Artie (Kevin McHale) are both trying to woo the hilariously ditzy Sugar Motta (Vanessa Lengies), who apparently has a boatload of money and a non-Mobster father.… Read More
The Walking Dead, “Nebraska” (Television)
February 13, 2012 -I have a lot of feelings when it comes to The Walking Dead. And, if you’ll recall, a lot of them are far from positive. I can’t help it – the first season of the show spoiled me by being practically flawless. Add in a slow run of shows in season two, and I couldn’t help but feel that it was somewhat lacking – until the midseries finale.
Well, I’m happy to report that The Walking Dead and I are once again on speaking terms. I got my fair share of everything this time around – gore, blood, startling zombie jump moments, and some good ol’ fashioned gunfire.… Read More
Damaged #4 by Full Clip Productions (Graphic Novels)
December 5, 2011 -First time checking out Damaged? Check out my interview with creator Michael Schwarz here: part one and part two.
It’s that time again: another month, another issue of Damaged from Full Clip Productions. The holidays are around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with some good ol’ fashioned vigilantism?
I’ve already given the series as high praise as I think can be given: great story, explosive action, great artwork. And that all is just is as true as ever. Issue #3 left me wanting more, and with the introduction of some surprising background story for Henry in issue #4, the readers really get some insight into what’s made Henry the man he is today.… Read More
Damaged #3 by Full Clip Productions (Graphic Novels)
November 21, 2011 -First time checking out Damaged? Check out my interview with creator Michael Schwarz here: part one and part two. Reviews for issues #1 and #2 are also up.
If there’s one thing that I can definitely give Full Clip Productions credit for, it’s this: consistent badassery. After two issues, a skeptic could have maybe dismissed the series as having gotten lucky – first with a strong opener, then going off of that in a second issue. But with three under their belt, there’s no denying that Damaged is solid, and probably will remain so for the rest of its duration.… Read More
The Walking Dead, “Cherokee Rose” (Television)
November 6, 2011 -Oh, The Walking Dead. I don’t know what to do with you.
Last week, I talked about how I felt as though the show had slowed down – not enough forward momentum, not enough going on. But last week, Carl woke up. Otis and Shane ran from a herd of zombies. After this week’s episode, where the most action we saw was Glenn taking his shirt off for Maggie, I feel like I spoke too soon.
I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but everything I talked about last week remains true for this week’s episode: The Walking Dead needs to progress, and it hasn’t.… Read More
Chuck, “Chuck Versus the Zoom” (Television)
October 30, 2011 -To call the opening of Chuck‘s fifth and final season a hot mess would be a bit harsh. After all, “Chuck Versus the Zoom” has plenty going for it in the humor and action department, and in more ways than one, the series shows signs of returning to its core values. And let’s face it, it felt great to see the gang back together for one last romp at the Burbank Buy More. Even so, “Zoom” is far from a total knock out.
The central plot itself is fairly predictable and nothing we haven’t seen before. There’s your typical hotshot baddie, four hundred pound WWF reject, and mustache-twirling power-hungry maniac, who we first saw in the season four finale, “Chuck Versus the Cliffhanger.” Recently booted from the CIA, the team of misfit spies – Chuck, Sarah, Morgan, Casey, and Chuck’s sister, Ellie, who mostly acts as an extra brain – have gone freelance, forming Carmichael Industries.… Read More
The Walking Dead, “Save the Last One” (Television)
October 30, 2011 -- I wasn’t entirely sold on the season premiere of The Walking Dead, and the second episode made me feel like things were picking up in stride. With the last episode ending in a cliffhanger, we were bound to see big things this time around: Sophia’s return, Carl’s inevitable return from the brink of death, or… something, right?
While the show is always brings good returns in gore and character development, it felt to me like last night’s episode, “Save the Last One” was a lot of filler with very little in terms of thrills. It’s great to have a horror show that doesn’t skimp on developing its people, but it can’t be all one, none of the other.… Read More
Bedlam, “Cohabitants” (Television)
October 1, 2011 -What do you get when you cross Melrose Place with Ghost Adventures? Meet Bedlam, a goofy, spooky, sexy new supernatural drama on BBC America, starring four young flat mates and an old mental asylum.

Rule number one of most ghost stories: young people are stupid. And the case is no different for Kate (Charlotte Salt), Ryan (Will Young), and Molly (Ashley Madekwe). They’re hot, they’re naive, they’re sensitive, and they see no problem in living in an ultra swank, ultra gentrified asylum.… Read More
Doctor Who, “Closing Time” (Television)
September 27, 2011 -If I want to be totally honest, I prefer my Doctor Who to be a little bit on the stupid side. Time travel, paradoxes, trippy villains, and emotional performances are all well and good, but “Closing Time”‘s quaint story and zingy one-liners managed to pull out all the stops without a hitch. How this bodes for the finale, however, may be another story.
SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading here.
James Corden, last seen in series five’s “The Lodger,” returned as the lovable doofus Craig, now married to sweetheart Sophie (Daisy Haggard). The couple also have a baby son called Alfie, informally – and hilariously – known as Stormageddon, per his own request.… Read More
