“The Lion King” still a classic after 17 years (Movies)
September 18, 2011 -The year was 1994, Clinton was in office, cell phones looked like a military device, Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, and flannel was all the rage. That same year, Disney’s classic film The Lion King burst into theatres. Since then, the name Simba has gone on to become a household name, spanning all reaches of the globe and spawning a sequel, a prequel, a Tony Award winning Broadway musical, and critical prestige.
In tandem with the film’s re-release on 2-disc Diamond Edition Blu-Ray on October 4th (what a coincidence), Disney has let the film loose on to theatres in a trendy 3D remaster.… Read More
“Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” shows us what it takes to be unstoppable (Movies)
June 26, 2011 -Everyone between the ages of 18 and 35 knew about Lenogate. After just six months, Conan O’Brien was effectively muscled out of hosting The Tonight Show in its classic form and was legally prohibited from appearing as the host of a television show for the next six months. The only logical conclusion? Go on a comedy tour instead.
Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop is a documentary by Rodman Flender that covers the six months following the end of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. From inception to realization, Flender offers us an inside look at the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour that is nothing short of amazing.… Read More
“Super 8″ takes us back to the good ol’ days, but not without setbacks (Movies)
June 12, 2011 -A mysterious monster, a group of kids that have seen too much, and the trouble with parents. Any number of old-timey summer blockbusters follow this formula, but just because it’s been recycled doesn’t make it a bad thing. And the Internet has spoken: Super 8 is a great throwback to the summer matinee. An homage to films in a time when Goonies ruled, there’s no doubt that the film will make anyone over the age of twenty wax nostalgic.
That’s not to say that everything about the movie is just a mishmash of things we’ve seen before. With a tremendous new group of child actors, strong lead actors all around, and excellent direction from J.J.… Read More
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Movies)
May 23, 2011 -I knew my interest in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was waning when I became more interested in my take-out fruit cup from IHOP than the events transpiring on-screen. While the latest Pirates is a much better picture than 2007’s At World’s End, it is still a bloated, self-indulgent cash cow with as much heart as Blackbeard, himself.
Before I get into the review, let me take you down memory lane. Just a few short years ago, I was a diehard Pirates of the Caribbean fan. Enchanted by the first movie like millions of others, I was completely swept up in the excitement and hoo-ha of the whole franchise.… Read More
“Thor” is a strong start to this year’s Marvel movie lineup (Movies)
May 9, 2011 -Let’s get it out there: I’m a superhero fan. Growing up, my father would tell me all about Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the rest the same way that some little girls were probably told about Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood. I find myself anticipating opening weekend at the release of every superhero movie, and with Thor kicking off the Marvel superhero releases for the year, I can’t say that I was disappointed. While the movie had its flaws, it was undeniably fun and another exciting prelude to the upcoming Avengers movie.
Ever since CGI started to really flex its muscles this past decade, we’ve seen a flood of superhero movies.… Read More
Tangled 2-disc Blu-Ray/DVD (Movies)
April 14, 2011 -Ask my parents, ask my close friends – hell, ask Lauren. They’ll all tell you: I have an unhealthy appreciation for Tangled. And who could blame me? It features original songs by Alan Menken, its two leads are voiced perfectly by Mandy Moore and Chuck’s Zachary Levi, it’s even produced by God of Pixar, himself, John Lasseter. And just in case those three elements weren‘t enough, it’s Walt Disney’s 50th animated film to date.
Yeah, the Mouse got it right this time.
But chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve already seen the movie. So in lieu of regurgitating everything you already know about it, let’s just talk about the two-disc Blu-ray package, eh?… Read More
