William and Kate’s modern-day fairytale

katemiddletonprincewilliam

Like a lot of people, I was fed up with the Royal Wedding before it even happened. And who could blame me? Here was an over-glorified, self-aggrandized dog and pony show in the face of death, destruction, recession, and Donald Trumps’s loose jaw. If anything, society should have frowned on the event from the get-go, and to be honest, I was even drafting an editorial on why I couldn’t care less about any of it.

Nonetheless, I tuned into a live stream for no other reason but to see The Dress. But then something happened just at the 2 a.m. mark. Kate Middleton stepped out of the car at the West Entrance of Westminster Abbey, smiling from head-to-toe and donned in a radiant white gown designed by Sarah Burton.

In that moment, Kate encapsulated grace, style, and complete potential not seen since Princess Diana took center stage in 1981. But unlike Diana, here was a completely different girl—woman—not brought up with title, prestige, or underneath the weight of a crown. Kate was living every simple girl’s dream to marry a prince, live in a castle, and live happily ever after. However archaic those practices may be in a modern world, the tear buds were welling up. Oh God, I was a goner.

I got lost in the fairytale, which is precisely what it looked like from start to finish.  Well past five in the morning, I switched back-and-forth between CNN and E! News live streams, drinking it all in. I wanted to remember this historical event; if not for myself, but for Diana.

More than anything, however, the whole affair was a relief. In a never-ending media frenzy overflowing with spin, gossip, and bad news, someone hit the pause button. We got a wedding — a joyous, promising event which, even for the most cynical, symbolized a new beginning. Despite all the pomp, circumstance, and silly hats, the event was a simple union between two kids who happened to fall in love in front of the whole world.

I don’t know about you, but I’d take that over all the vitriol in the world. What can I say, I’m a sap.

I wish William and Kate, newly titled Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the very best.

Oddly enough, I was indifferent to the royal wedding as well but at 3am, I did wake up and turned the tv on. While I think Kate (or Katherine now) is a beautiful girl and her dress was amazing, for some reason, when she was taking her bows, I thought she looked really old. Over all thought, a pretty cool fairy tail to watch. Thanks for covering this, I think it shows your web site covers all different types of entertainment news.

Thanks for reading, Candy! I enjoyed watching it because it was a complete departure from what we’re used to in this day and age, especially in the states. I hate to overuse a word so much, but it really did feel like a fairytale. And I thought Kate looked beautiful every step of the way.
